Top 5 of Antigua

April 21, 2019 0 Comments

Situated in the West Indies, among the Leeward Islands, Antigua is easily one of the most stunning and unique islands in the Caribbean. The destination boasts 365 fabulous beaches (a beach for every day of the year), year-round sunshine, historical sugar cane plantations, a lush rainforest for thrilling canopy tours, four national parks, a laid-back atmosphere and the list could go on! To say the least, Antigua has something for everyone–whether you’re ready to lounge on the beach or hike to the best views on the island.

If you’re planning a trip to this Caribbean destination or adding it to your bucket list, here are the all-around top 5 experiences of Antigua that you don’t want to miss!

1. Take in the views at Shirley Heights Lookout

The beauty of Antigua is that everywhere you look, there’s a breathtaking view to gawk at. But the best view? Shirley Heights Lookout, around 490 feet above sea level. Take in views of the English and Falmouth Harbours, and even the southern island of Guadeloupe and the Montserrat volcano (on a clear day). It’s a view you don’t want to miss!

2. Indulge on French-inspired Caribbean cuisine at Cecilia’s High Point Cafe

Dining in Antigua never disappoints–everything is authentic and always locally sourced with the freshest produce. However, when it comes to the best view from your table, an incredible meal, delicious cocktails, friendly service, laid-back island vibes AND within close proximity to the airport… Cecilia’s High Point Cafe checks all the boxes!

3. Hike and explore the Pillars of Hercules

Visible via boat tour or accessible via trails from Galleon Bay, this natural limestone rock formation is a must-see! The trail may be a bit rough for some, but it’s nothing a good pair of shoes can’t handle! The views and snorkeling are well worth the hike or speed boat tour!

4. Taste the sweetest pineapple in the world from Cades Bay Agricultural Station

Near the southwest coast of the island, in Cades Bay, there are over 20 acres of Antigua Black Pineapple being grown, a.k.a the sweetest pineapple in the world! Antigua’s unique environment of rich soil and spot-on amount of rainfall are what is said to make the fruit so sweet. The pineapples are similar in shape, size and texture as your average pineapple, but the skin remains dark green–even when ripe!

5. Explore historic Fort James

Dating back to the 18th century, Fort James was one of many forts built by the British in fear of a French invasion. Located at the entrance of St. John’s harbor, all that remains is a gunpowder storage building, or “magazine,” several cannons and the fort’s wall foundation–plus, a killer view!
