    Had a great time.

We went to Riu Republica to celebrate my bfs graduation and birthday. Arrived on a Thursday, left on a Sunday and did not need to leave the resort. One of our favorite events was the Pink Party on Friday, the lines to go are long but they move fast. There are a lot of places to eat most are buffet, the steak house is hard to find and some time are to get on the waitlist because they do not have reservations. The app stated that there were two steak houses on the resort but not on the resort map and no one was able to tell us where the second one was. The jerk chick hut was delicious located right near the pool and bar. We also had a great time going down the multiple water slides on the resort. It was hard to get pool / beach towels, it seemed like they were always out of towels. We also had a couples massage at the spa on the resort which was very relaxing. Overall we had a great time.

Pay the extra and stay in a more higher end hotel

Before I start… Riu Republica shares the beach with Hard Rock to the left and Occidental Caribe, Majestic & Royalton to the right. I have just returned from a 2 week all inclusive stay at the Republica travelled 14th May to 28th May 2023. First impressions on arrival was disappointing. Nothing stands out or gives you the wow factor unfortunately. It’s advertised at 5* however it’s definitely a 3*. Reasons for this is because we have visited the Caribbean 8 times staying at a Dreams, Royalton & Bahia Principe resort previously, we were always made aware that RIU properties are good etc. As you can imagine by staying at a Dreams & Royalton… the RIU is nowhere near that standard. There was no welcome drink or cold towel on arrival, no bellboys to cart your luggage to your room, instead you are having to drag your suitcases through the resort that’s absolutely huge with a map and told to find your room. Not good after 21 hours travelling but we didn’t let that start us off on the wrong foot. Room was ok however we found dirty socks and wrappers in the cupboards when we arrived. Eww. Mini bar with water, lemonade, cola and beer which gets restocked every second day. We were in room 4085 which was overlooking the theatre with a partial sea view. No problem getting to sleep once the shows have finished around 11pm. The hotel itself has beautiful grounds however they are not well kept unfortunately. The guests have no respect and leave the place a mess, plates and cups left around the pool, on top of bins, in corridors etc. Plenty of times we came across this and no cleaners about to take care of this, same for the beach. Used plasters, cups, plates you name it just left in the sand. We would go the beach the following day an notice the same plates and cups still on the floor. Really not good. The staff probably don’t clean it up as they are sick to death of dealing with guests who have no respect for the resort. We seen people having sex on the chairs round the pool at night, sex in the party pool and also in the sea. We got the impression the hotel is a party hotel. There aren’t any quite sections of the hotel at all. We spent a day at the ‘quite’ side and it was no different to the party side. Just young guests drinking and being sick round the pool. Don’t get me wrong we did enjoy our time here however if we had known how bad it was before we left the UK, we would have changed hotels. The pools were not refreshing, by lunch time they were full of dead flys. The beach is absolutely beautiful but again, it’s not looked after because guests are just untidy and disrespectful. We spent most of our time by the beach bar as we found it to be the cleanest part, was quick to get drinks and not many people were on to it so worked for us. Food - it’s not great unfortunately. The buffet is like a wild zoo, guests barging in the queue, massive queues all the time, it was crazy, the food was bland, tasteless, cold. Same for the Al a Cartes, don’t expect a lovely meal in any of them, it’s all cold buffet food. Omelettes we’re amazing by the guy who made them when we first arrived however after a few days I couldn’t see him anywhere. The omelettes then became soggy in the middle and burnt on the outside, not forgetting I found a hair in mine on our last day. Staff get annoyed when you ask them for something for example we were always waiting for water or a spoon or anything that you ask, they either don’t bring it to you or take ages, the service was appalling and we were not the only people to say this either. We did two excursions, one being Scape Park which I booked with TUI before we left the UK. It was a fun day out however lots of walking and climbing then we done Catalina Island we booked this with a vendor on the beach called Joseph. It was a brilliant day out so much fun and a gorgeous beach to eat lobster on. I would seriously recommend staying in one of the neighbour hotels, the Republica is not luxury, it’s a party scene with 18 to 25 year olds so if that’s your thing then this hotel is perfect for you. We are in our early 30’s and as much as we didn’t mind the party vibe, it’s the state the hotel gets left in along with the service that has put us off staying in a RIU again. Oh I’ll end this review on the Jerk Chicken Hut… it was the place to eat at this whole holiday! Unreal.

    4* at best

What you need to know - The resort is really big, if you are in the first part of it (take a good look at the resort main picture), it takes at least 8-10 minutes to get to the beach. -There's 3 pools in the smaller section of the hotel and 3 pools in the biggest part ( the one you see on the main picture). -There's 2 buffet (one for the smaller section and one for the bigger one) -There's a lot of mosquitos at night, make sure to bring some OFF, as the resort has a lot of vegetation. Please note, the gift shop offers the OFF for the cost of 27$ US :( -The beach is beautiful ( white sand, clear water) -There's enough chairs everywhere (even at the beach) - There's no ''View'' - the resort is average and the way it was built doesn't allow to have a view on the ocean. You will not see the ocean until you arrived at the ocean. I wouldn't say that's it's a beautiful nor ugly resort, but there's only palm threes and grass. -It is a party hotel - lot of young wild souls. You can still find some peace at the relaxing pool, but keep in mind that you will still hear the party. -Quite often there's no towels available, you may need to wait 1 hour or 2. -The pillows are really small, more like cushions size. -There's nothing around the resort (except for other resorts). -The drinks aren't good, the alcool ratio versus juice isn't properly measured + there's no real juice. -When we arrived, we were expecting a drink and smiley staff, but it wasn't the case (compared to other Rius). Restaurants ( no reservation) -Japanese : 4/5 -Spanish : 3.5/5 -Steakhouse : 2/5 (really basic, no spices) -Buffet : 4/5 This is my 3rd Riu ( Panama Playa Blanca & Cancun Palace Costa Mujeres), out of the 3 this one comes in 3rd position. I recommend to read the reviews carefully. If you are looking for a real 5*, this is not it. It's a 4* at best.

NEVER AGAIN, even if it was free.

This was the worst RIU that I've ever experienced. The food was nasty. Some of the staff was rude. The room had ants, spiders & a flying roach. NO WASHCLOTHS. The toilet didn't work properly.
